Leopardi: Thoughts

Jag läser sedan en tid Giacomo Leopardi: "Thoughts and The Broom" (originaltitel "Pensieri", postumt utgiven, resp. dikten "La Ginestra"), Hesperus Press, 2002.

Av de 111 numrerade aforismerna eller prosastyckena har jag ringat in och gjort förstrykningar i 28 stycken, och jag skulle egentligen vilja återge dem alla här - men det skulle föra för långt.

Mycket är jävligt bra, annat är bra, något förstår jag inte.

Om total illusionslöshet är möjlig så finns den här. Kanske måste man ha en speciell läggning för att bli - upplyft - av Leopardis gränslösa pessimism vad gäller människans värld och villkor.

Det finns i alla fall ett slags glädje i klarsynen.

Det här tilltalar mig:

"Death is not an evil, because it frees us from all evils, and while it takes away good things, it takes away also the desire for them. Old age is the supreme evil, because it deprives us of all pleasures, leaving us only with the appetite for them, and it brings with it all sufferings. Nevertheless, we fear death, and we desire old age."

Eller som här, när Leopardi talar om förhållandet mellan bedrägeri och sanning i det sociala livet - och i hela vår existens:

"Imposture is valid and efficacious even without the truth, but without it the truth can do nothing. And that does not come, in my opinion, from the evil inclination of our race, but because the truth is always too poor and inadeqate, so that man always need, if they are to be delighted and moved, some illusion and sleight of hand. They must be promised something much bigger and better than can be given. Nature herself is an impostor towards man, making his life lovable and endurable principally by means of imagination and deception."
